My story

Hi, my name is Max and I have had type 1 diabetes since I was 23. I have been a satisfied user of the FreeStyle Libre sensor for a few years now. But it frustrated me that the adhesive power of the sensor was insufficient in combination with my lifestyle.

As soon as I started sweating during exercise, I noticed that my sensor became looser on the skin. And especially with water sports such as surfing or diving, there was a good chance that the sensor would have fallen off my arm when I took off the wet wetsuit. This even happened with new sensors that I had taped to my arm the same day.
The annoying thing is that my health insurer only reimburses for a number of sensors per year. So every time a sensor came loose from my arm prematurely, there was a greater chance that I wouldn't have enough sensors in stock at the end of the year. Then I had two options:
  • The last weeks of the year I worked again with old school finger pricks to measure my blood values
  • I had to buy a few additional (expensive) sensors for the last weeks of the year, which unfortunately I had to pay for myself

Both options weren't great, so I started looking for alternatives. I have tried a number of products through my diabetes nurse. I tried sports bands (a kind of captain's armband), which worked, but as soon as they got wet, the sensor could come loose. I even tried the Dexcom sensor for a while, but in my experience the adhesive power was even worse than the FreeStyle Libre sensor.
Eventually I started with alcohol and skin glue wipes and plasters. I have tried different products and brands. Ultimately, I ended up with three products that work perfectly for me and with which the sensor is guaranteed to stick for at least 14 days.

The product

The products I ended up with are an alcohol wipe, a skin glue wipe and a special skin patch. These products are gentle on the skin, remain breathable and are easy to remove. This works perfectly for me. But I ran into the problem that these products are not just available everywhere. So it was difficult to always have everything in stock and the products were not necessarily cheap.

In the meantime, more and more people (with diabetes) were aware of my search and wanted to use the same products. That was not easy, there are many different sensors on the market and everyone has their own specific wishes. It is also difficult to buy products just for yourself and placing a large order with a manufacturer does not make sense.
So I made a selection of the most commonly used products and contacted the manufacturers. I managed to purchase the products at a reasonable price and share them with other diabetics in the form of a convenient subscription.

How I use it:

Below I have explained in four steps how to stick a new sensor.

Step 1 - alcohol wipe

I use the alcohol wipe to make the skin as free of grease as possible. Give the alcohol a minute to evaporate and move on to the second step.

Step 2 - skin glue wipe

Rub the skin adhesive wipe over the area where the sensor will be placed and allow to dry for 1 minute. Make sure you also cover the area for the patch.

Step 3 - stick the sensor on your arm

Stick the new sensor on your arm, in the middle of the surface where the glue is. If necessary, scan immediately with your phone.

Step 4 - stick the patch

Stick the patch over your sensor, it's best if the patch picks up most of the area with glue.
